By the way I had Vietnamese friend in grad school... Fuq I think was his name... doing his MS in Mechanical Engineering, he too trekked with his wife and a bicycle to a refugee center... not sure if it was Philippines or some other country in Southeast Asia.

When Saigon fell, he misunderstood the order to laydown arms... so his company was on of the last to surrender lol. He was placed in a "re-education" camp until he managed to escape. I recall him telling me, that although he was fighting against the North Vietnamese forces, it is good they won. Today Vietnam is a sovereign country that has one of the highest economic growth rated.

I am glad I can bring some laughter to West Asia.

Your friend must had gone to Thailand by land. My father spent a couple of years, and my maternal grandfather spent greater than ten years in those "re-education camp." I am not sure the camp changed my dad. But it changed my grandfather a lot...
